Support Help Empowerment (SHE) was established in 1989 as a response to the lack of services for women affected by family violence. SHE had its roots in the Domestic Violence Action Group, whose members recognised the many long-term effects of violence on women’s lives, and formed SHE as a women’s service based on a philosophy of equity and empowerment.
Since its formation almost 30 years ago, SHE has provided short to long-term specialised support and counselling for women in Southern Tasmania who have experienced family violence. In this time, SHE has become a leading non-government organisation in Tasmania working with people and communities impacted by family violence. Central to all of our work is the belief that women are entitled to a life free from violence.
In 2016 SHE obtained a grant through the Safe Home, Safe Families; Family Violence Action Plan 2015 – 2020. This enabled SHE to extend service delivery to the Launceston and North West Coast regions of Tasmania, making SHE a state wide service. SHE continues to be funded by the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services.
